At St Mary’s we are passionate about reading and strive to ensure all children become confident readers with a love of books and stories.
Every night children are able to take books home from our large collection to read with their families. We communicate reading progress and targets with parents through a reading diary. Throughout the week children learn to read through literacy lessons, reading with the teacher in small groups, individual reading, paired reading with a child from a different year group and independent reading.
Intervention programmes are designed to accelerate reading progress for children who need extra support.
As well as being able to choose books from our library, children also have the opportunity to visit the public library to begin the habit of borrowing books to read for pleasure. We engender a love of reading by celebrating events like World Book Day and by inviting authors and poets into school to inspire the children.
