Roald Dahl Day at Sutton Community Academy - 17th July
Everyone looked amazing for this event! There were lots of different characters from Roald Dahl's books portrayed by Year Five's incredible costumes and props. Well done all!
The busy day included Maths, English, Design and Science activities. The Main Hall looked really good and there were lots more characters to be seen! (Though Melissa definitely had the biggest BFG ears there!)
All the adults at Sutton Community Academy said how well behaved and polite St Mary's children were. They are a pleasure to take any where. Well done Year 5!
Our visit to Quarrydale for a 'Taster Day' was amazing! We made lots of exciting things which we could take home. All the staff praised Year 5 for their excellent manners and good behaviour.
Thank you Quarrydale.
Year 5 visit to The Yorkshire Sculpture Park
In Year 5 we have been studying the work of some different sculptors, including Henry Moore. We visited the Yorkshire Sculpture Park to see some of Moore's sculptures in the Country Park, but also to see a variety of works by many other sculptors including Barbara Hepworth, Antony Gormley, AiWeiwei, Zak Ove, Tony Cragg and Joan Miro.
Whilst we were there, we stopped to sketch some of the sculptures. When we drew part of Barbara Hepworth's 'The Family of Man' our artist guide, Leadin, suggested that we added colour to our sketches as well. We were surprised by this as we didn't have paints or coloured pencils. She suggested that we used grass, mud, daisies and leaves to add colour by rubbing onto the paper. It worked really well!
Tony Cragg's work was displayed both inside the galleries and around the gardens. There were also some of his drawings in the gallery too.
Week beginning February 6th 2017
This week, Year 5 were involved in Take Over Radio workshops with Phil.
We learned a lot about communication and developments in radio broadcasting. We wrote and recorded messages to Mrs Nicholls. Some of these recordings will become part of a Community Radio Project.
It was great fun!

Our visit to Trent Bridge Cricket Ground was really good. We found out lots of information about its proud history; its charm and its character. We used our Maths, English, History and Geography skills whilst learning more about the game of cricket.
We had a tour of the building and grounds, then worked on improving our bowling and batting skills. It was a great day!
